What is floatation and how does it work?
Flotation/floating/floatation therapy is a technique used to enter into the deepest states of relaxation quickly, effectively and consistently and is based on a revolutionary scientific approach to deep relaxation called R.E.S.T. (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Technique/Therapy). R.E.S.T. involves floating, on a 30cm deep skin temperature solution (34.5 degrees C), of water and 30% Epsom Salts in a Floatation Tank. The float tank is designed to screen out external stimulation (light, sound, gravity, etc and to maintain a neutral temperature around the body).
Scientists estimate that up to 90% of the brain's normal
workload is caused by the effects of routine environmental
stimulation - the combined effects of gravity, temperature,
touch, light and sound on the nervous system, muscles
and sense organs of the body. When the float tank screens
out these external physical stimuli, a pure
state of "sensory" relaxation is created. Under these
unique conditions your body has a chance to restore
its natural powers of self regulation and healing, while you simply
lie back and enjoy a blissfully peaceful and dream-like meditative state.

Benefits of Floating
Relaxation in a floatation tank brings peace and quiet, increased well-being and can serve as an alternative form of treatment to reduce stress or relieve persistent pain. Following is a short list of some of the effects which have been reported by researchers and/or users:
Promotes total calm, peaceful relaxation, eliminated fatigue and jet lag; improves sleep; alleviates stress; energises, rejuvenates and revitalises
Stimulates left/right brain synchronisation; shifts brain waves from Beta to lower frequency Alpha, Theta and even Delta; creates mental clarity, alertness; increases creativity, problem solving; heightens visualiation, deepens meditation; expands awareness, intensifies acuteness of all the senses, accelerates learning
Enhances hypnotherapy and self-hypnosis; increases motivation, diminishes depression, anxiety and fear; facilitates freedom from habits, phobias and addictions

Our Float Tank
Floatation tanks are a
modern health and wellness tool enjoyed by many thousands
of people worldwide. Floating is very popular throughout Europe, including the UK and in the USA. Here in Adelaide, South Australia there are only a few float tank services available to the public. We are proud to be the only venue in the Adelaide Hills to offer floatation therapy to you.
Our Apollo™ Float Tank was built for us by Float Tank Australia, and was installed in our Mt Barker, Adelaide Hills Studio in December 2008. We enjoyed six months of floating ourself whilst renovations to our studio were being finished off, before opening our doors to the public in June, 2009.

With its Hygienic and non-claustrophobic design, in-tank light and audio/visual controls, over temperature safety switch and internal cockpit style sliding door, your comfort is ensured. The tank measures 2280 mm long x 1750 mm wide x 1300 high.
Other common names for a Float tank are float pod, isolation tank, floatation tank and sensory deprivation tank.
Introducing you to Floating
Please allow half an hour extra for your first float appointment for your free orientation and for you to ask questions. If you have any concerns about the tank or the floating process we are here to help you and to ensure that any apprehensions or concerns are alleviated before you float. The space inside a float tank is surprisingly NOT claustrophobic and people who are claustrophobic can and DO float in complete comfort. You may even chose to float with the manually operated door open, or with the light on, both of which are completely in your control and you are free to get in and out the tank as you please. Music while you float is also available if you desire. The ideal (to achieve optimum R.E.S.T.) is to float with the door closed, light off and in silence, though you go with what is right for you.
It is very rare for people who are claustrophobic to not close the door over before the end of their first session. Most feel safe, secure, and very relaxed during their float. They also feel very empowered after they float because of facing a fear and overcoming it. The float tank is probably the safest and most reassuring environment to assist people to overcome claustrophobia!
Floating is so soothing, peaceful and rejuvenating that its well worth the effort of working through any concerns about the tank environment before you float. When you lay back, close your eyes and settle into the relaxed skin temperature water it becomes almost impossible to distinguish where your skin ends and where the water begins. This creates the illusion of weightlessness and floating in space where you drift peacefully off to the deepest levels of relaxation and total calm.
Three Floats to Get You Started
If you haven’t floated before, or it’s a long time since your last float, it is very beneficial to have a few floating sessions spaced fairly close together. We recommend 3 floats within a maximum two week period. Floating may take a bit of acclimatising to the unique tank environment, and to help you with this we offer a Float Discovery Program for new clients.
The essence of floating really is about ‘letting go’…of the body and the mind. We are so used to using muscle tension to hold ourself under the forces of gravity and it can take a few floats to practice ‘letting go’ and releasing muscle tension. Many of us are also very ‘in our heads’ and need a bit of practice to ‘switch off’. EVERYONE is different and there are many factors in each individuals life that will impact on how they take to floating, i.e. meditation experience, stress levels, life events, muscular holding patterns, or even the day they are having etc.
Generally the first float is really an adventure where one ‘feels out’ the new and unique tank environment. It's an opportunity to let go of any concerns about the environment or the process of floating, perhaps release expectations, and get used to how it feels in the tank. You will get your first taste of the potential of where floating can take you.
The second float sees people coming back to familiar territory, feeling more comfortable as any previous concerns from before their first float are totally gone, and they are eager to get back in the tank and be welcomed by the soothing and nurturing environment. Second time floaters generally settle in a lot quicker, achieving a deep level of relaxation with less mind chatter or resistance to letting go in the mind and body.
By the third float most people are acclimatised enough to really ‘let go’ quickly and enter into the deepest states of relaxation with ease and grace, now having learnt to trust that the water is 100% supporting them and fully surrender to the experience.
